At the beginning of the week we shared the story of ‘Little Lumpty’
which has sparked our interest in building walls. Already our walls are
becoming stable and strong, as we carefully construct them using lego and
wooden bricks. Through this active learning experience we have been involved
and concentrating and we have kept on
trying even when our first attempts failed. However, as you can see we
are becoming master builders now!
Following on from looking at high and low walls related to the story of
Little Lumpty we have been sharing our prior knowledge of mathematical words we
know and use related to ‘measure’.
Using the skill of direct comparison we have been exploring finding
objects that are ‘longer than’ and ‘shorter than’ a chosen unit of measure.
We have been preparing for the forthcoming ‘Big School’s Birdwatch 2016
which is organised by the RSPB. We have been sharing our prior
knowledge about birds and generated some questions for further enquiry. We are becoming
familiar with key features of a variety of species of garden birds.
At Forest School we discovered a bird in distress. It was
‘Pedro’, the Spanish parrot. He was very upset, because the strong wind had
blown his nest away! He had built a big warm nest for himself, because he was
feeling very cold here in England. So, he asked us to build him a new nest. He
asked us to build it with twigs which measured ‘longer than’ a ten block stick.
He also said he didn’t mind if some of the twigs were the ‘same size as’ the ten
block stick. It was a good job we had been practising our measuring skills in
class. We built a new nest for Pedro in no time. We even made it warm and comfy
by lining it with moss and grass. Pedro was very happy with it. We gave him
some grass seeds to eat and then we asked him to come back to our classroom for a
drink of water.
Next week we are beginning to learn how to speak Spanish. Pedro is going to help us. He is Mrs. Wharton's special friend, whom she met when she visited a school in Santander.
