Observation of nature

Inspired by the appearance of spring flowers in the school grounds, the children have created their own floral designs in the style of the artist and designer Eloise Renouf.

The children have also been developing their observational skills by drawing from first- hand experience, drawing natural objects.

Following a child’s interest, at Forest School, using their knot tying skills, the children attached and secured their Spanish flags to the trunks of the trees.

Mud glorious mud! The sponsored obstacle event proved to be a most enjoyable experience for all who took part.

We have had a wonderful week!

Frogs, princes and princesses...

The frogs have returned to lay their eggs in our school pond. The frogspawn is in the early stage of development. We will be observing regularly to detect the changes in the development of the tadpoles!

The arrival of the frogs has inspired the sharing of the story of ‘The Princess and the Frog’.  Could one of the frogs in our pond be a real prince?
Talking about princesses, the children believe that real princesses have long hair, wear beautiful ball gowns, wear crowns, sparkly high heeled shoes and exquisite jewellery.

The children have been on a quest to discover who is the real princess in school. After discussion, they decided to place a pea on the seat of selected teachers’ chairs and waited to see how they felt at the end of the day. They also needed to find out, which of the teachers' feet  would fit into the princess sparkly shoe.

Some children decided to place a pea under their mum's mattress at home to see if their mum could be a princess. Some mums were very achy in the morning!

The children have enjoyed building and exploring in the outdoor classroom. How fast can our cars really travel?

All aboard the ‘Pendolino train’ to London!

Trikes, bikes and scooters….

Look how much our beanstalks have grown now!

Signs of Spring

This week we have been learning about the safety procedures, for using a hand tool called a ‘mallet’, at Forest School. Using this tool will enable us to build more stable structures. Our ever improving knot skills will help us tie and secure sticks together.

In the outdoor classroom we have looking for signs of spring and have used our observations in our creative work.

Our beanstalks are beginning to grow. We have watered them daily and have placed them near a window to get sunlight.

We enjoyed doing something funny for money on Comic Relief day!

Giants and shoes

A great start to a new half term. We have been sharing stories about giants, inspired by the story of ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. This has led us down several creative paths. The children have drawn and painted giants, created their own beanstalks and written their own stories.

We recently discovered a bag of keys. We thought carefully and tried to work out who each set of keys belonged to.  We even worked out which keys belonged to the giant!

We have planted broad beans and will take care of them to ensure they grow into healthy plants!

After sharing the text: ‘ The Shoemaker Extraordinaire’, a story about a giant and his shoes, the children embarked on an investigation about shoes. The story also inspired them to design a new pair of shoes.

The children measured their own school shoes. They compared the size of their shoe with others.

The children then explored and investigated ways of making shoes and discovered an artist called Jennifer Collier who makes shoes out of recycled paper. By looking at some of her designs they discovered a way of making a high heeled shoe by using a cone and a cylinder.

The children practised designing and making their shoes using plain paper at first. Then they chose to use maps like the artist Jennifer Collier. Using the map of the British Isles reminded the children of the story of the Giant’s Causeway running between Scotland and Ireland.

We really enjoyed World Book Day!

We will shortly be exploring the traditional fairy tale of ‘The Princess and the Pea’.
